The Students of the American Chemical Society affiliate at the University of Kentucky has focused on expanding membership and finding ways to creatively integrate research opportunities into the undergraduate experience. Our chapter has used the platform available to SACS to expose students to the research opportunities available with faculty at UK as well as at world-class facilities such as Oak Ridge National Lab, with the ultimate goal of inspiring greater enthusiasm for and participation in basic research at the undergraduate level. Our monthly chapter meetings have focused on aspects designed to appeal to undergraduate students with varied interests, such as educational opportunities and topical issues like environmentalism and sustainability. Other chapter activities this past year have included fundraising, membership expansion efforts, and outreach events to encourage scientific engagement among students in primary and secondary schools.
