We report on the preparation and characterization of thin ceria films (CeO2) grown on Ru(0001) in (111) orientation. The defect structure of the film is characterized at the atomic level using the scanning tunneling microscope (STM) and scanning tunneling spectroscopy in conjunction with density functional calculations from Joachim Sauer's group at the Humboldt University Berlin.Also, ensemble averaging techniques such as XPS and TPD are used to reveal the electronic structure of the surfaces and their chemical activity. The surface is used as a support for vanadia clusters as well as Au clusters and its adsorption and reaction characteristics are related to the defect structure of the ceria surfaces.
