Lignin is an abundant biopolymer most commonly derived from wood. While it is an important material in the construction and paper industries, there are many questions regarding its biosynthesis and biodegradation. This is particularly interesting regarding the role of lignin in biofuel production. Evidence suggests that the biosynthesis of lignin proceeds through a radical coupling mechanism. Therefore, we have synthesized the lignin precursors A  , B  , and C  with the intention of studying their phenoxy radicals by Electron Spin Resonance (ESR) spectroscopy, providing insight in the formation of lignin. In addition, the radical coupling mechanisms proposed for lignin biosynthesis suggest that similar chemistry could yield meta-phenylene polymers. Compound D  has been prepared to test this hypothesis.
