Trimetallic nitride endohedral metallofullerenes (TNT EMFs) have attracted significant attention due to their interesting properties and potential applications in biomedicine and nanomaterial sciences. A novel purification system based on the differences of the redox properties of these compounds makes it possible to isolate Sc3N@Ih-C80 and Sc3N@D3h-C78 and a mixture of Sc3N@D5h-C80 and Sc3N@D3-C68. Taking advantage of their different chemical reactivities, Sc3N@D5h-C80 was isolated from Sc3N@D3-C68. The PCnBM-type derivatization was achieved for the whole family of Sc3N EMFs to explore the differences of their reactivities and to study their potential applications in Organic Photovoltaic Solar Cells.
