Green chemistry, or sustainable chemistry, is the design of chemical processes that lessens the use of substances that are hazardous. It focuses on reducing waste products, creating non-toxic components, and making chemical processes more efficient. The goal of green chemistry is to create safer products and reduced usage of energy and resources in order to create an efficient and safer way to use chemistry in which the environment and its inhabitants aren't harmed. Green chemistry is commonly used in the purification of wastewater as natural freshwater continues to deplete. Wastewater treatment is important, both to organisms that inhabit water systems and to human consumption. However, water contains many harmful pollutants such as mercury, lead, cadmium, chromium and arsenic that are very harmful to living things. Though very unstable and often difficult to prepare, ferrate (VI) is known for its high oxidizing power and is recognized as being a green chemical, due to the fact that it does not emit harmful by-products. The result of this experiment is to implement the use of ferrate (VI) in the remediation of arsenite and other organic pollutants often found in drinking water. Ferrate (VI) is to be produced using various preparation methods, in which purity of the product will be analyzed. The efficiency of the oxidation of arsenite by ferrate (VI) will be analyzed and compared with that of other prepared ferrate (VI) products.
