The photocatalytic reduction of carbon dioxide to useful chemical feedstocks and fuels is a critical challenge facing the chemical community today. One approach toward this goal is to develop photocatalytic CO2 to CO conversion technologies, allowing an efficient and economic method for syngas production. Transition metal mediated photocatalytic CO2 reduction was first reported by Hawecker, Lehn and Ziessel with the fac-Re(bpy)(CO)3Cl complex. While the Lehn catalyst is an effective photoreductive catalyst its visible absorption spectrum is poor at best. Recent studies in our lab have explored alternative Re(I) non-innocent ligand catalysts capable of enhancing their visible response thereby harnessing a greater quantity of the available solar spectrum to drive catalysis. Photophysical and electrochemical properties of fac-Re(I) tricarbonyl complexes will be presented incorporating electron-rich oxyquinolate or �-diketonate ligand systems and their preliminary photocatalytic CO2 reduction properties discussed.
