Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), which is bioaccumulative and resistant to environmental degradation processes, is widely used in surface treatment agent and foam extinguishing agent. Herein, a combined process of vacuum ultraviolet and trivalent ions was firstly used for decomposition of aqueous perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA). PFOA (initial concentration of 36�M) could be efficiently defluorinated under original pH condition, with a molar ratio of PFOA/Fe3+ of 1.8, while the defluorination efficiency of PFOA by ferric ion only was hardly any, respectively. Addition of inorganic oxidants such as H2O2 and K2S2O8 inhibited the decomposition of PFOA. The negative effect of K2S2O8was more significant due to its strong absorption of photon and the competitive adsorption of ferric ion with PFOA. Both direct light degradation(185nm) and photocatalytically decomposition assisted by ferric ion (?=254 nm) was involved in the present possess. Additional trivalent iron significantly enhanced the degradation of PFOA and intermediates under VUV radiation.
