This presentation demonstrates that graphene oxide can not only serves as a fluorophore but also serve as an energy acceptor in fluorescent biosensors. Graphene oxide is not vulnerable to photo-bleaching as compared to organic dyes; and it is environmentally benign and easy to be bio-conjugated as compared to quantum dots compared to inorganic semiconductor quantum dots. This presentation shows a graphene oxide-aptamer biosensor with graphene oxide as the fluorophore, which is built on the charge transfer principle. This biosensor shows a limit of detection as low as 0.92 nM for Hg(II). In addition, a CdSe/ZnS quantum dot-aptamer-graphene oxide-composite biosensor has been developed based on the nano-metal surface energy transfer (NSET) process with graphene oxide as the energy acceptor. This biosensor has been used for detection of Pb(II) with a limit of detection of 90 pM.
