Zerovalent aluminum (ZVAl) activates hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) into hydroxyl radical (�OH) during it corrosion process at acidic pH (E0(Al+3/Al0) = -1.67 VNHE). However, at neutral pH, the production of �OH by the ZVAl/H2O2 system is limited due to the rapid passivation of the ZVAl surface. This study found that the presence of Cl- prevents the passivation of ZVAl at neutral pH, facilitating the electron transfer from ZVAl to H2O2. In the presence of 10,000 mg/L Cl- at pH 7, the degradation efficiency of organic compounds such as phenol, bisphenol A and cimetidine was higher than 80% in 4 h by the ZVAl/H2O2 system ([ZVAl]0 = 5 g/L, [H2O2]0 = 10 mM). The working pH range for the compound degradation was extended to pH 8 by the addition of Cl-. The efficiency of the ZVAl/H2O2 system with Cl- was affected by the concentrations of Cl-, H2O2, and ZVAl. In the experiments using seawater, the ZVAl/H2O2 system also exhibited effective performances for the degradation of organic compounds.
