Discussions and controversy around hydraulic fracturing have been common in recent years, both in the water sector and elsewhere.  In 2012, AWWA set to provide clarity on these issues to the water utility community and authored the white paper �Water and Hydraulic Fracturing� (publicly available on AWWA's website).  This paper covers many facets of oil and gas development, and neither promotes nor opposes the practices.  This talk will discuss the content of this paper as well as ongoing efforts to build awareness and collaboration between the water utility community and the oil and gas industry.  Other activities include supporting a graduate student's research on water use for oil and gas extraction in Texas, assisting in developing research needs for emergency response and water quality monitoring, and other ongoing efforts.
