The design and features of rigid Al/P-based FLPs are outlined and compared against comparable B/P-based ones. Electronic and steric tuning of substituents renders FLPs in which the Al- and B-sites perform similarly but with important subtle differences. The performance of these FLPs will be highlighted and analyzed in the activation of alkynes, carbon dioxide, and isocyanates as well as in the catalytic role in hydride activation and dehydrogenation. In a modified FLP approach even white phosphorus (P4) can be activated, which is a first step in the selective P4-conversion to specific organophosphorus products.
