Mentoring is a relationship established between two or more people that is both reciprocal and collaborative in nature, and one which leads to shared responsibility and accountability between mentor and mentee as they move toward goals. It can also be described as a process between two or more individuals who work together in order to assist in the career development of the less experienced person. However, mentoring takes an interesting twist when the mentor and mentee come from different cultural backgrounds. This presentation will first focus on the author's experience acting as a mentor and host to a visiting scholar from Turkey to describe the benefits and challenges of the mentor role. In addition, the author will also describe what it was like to move into the role of being the mentee during a sabbatical leave at the University of Western Sydney in Australia. Factors that mentors and mentees of different cultural backgrounds should consider when deciding on mentoring partners and how the mentoring process evolves over time will be discussed.
