Graphene could theoretically offer a high specific capacity near 550 F/g and has been thus the material of explosive interest in the supercapacitor community. In order for various advantages of graphene to be effective, however, further engineering of atomic configuration and electrode structure is desirable. In particular, increasing capacitance would position graphene more attractive as an alternative of conventional activated carbon. Along this direction, three approaches will be introduced in this presentation: 1) nitrogen-doping can increase the capacitance through enhanced affinity with carrier ions. 2) 3D porous structure that prevents the restacking of graphene increases multiple parameters in the supercapacitor performance. 3) Chemical treatment that dehydrates graphene oxide and thus blocks the restacking in the very early step in the synthesis of reduced graphene oxide will also be discussed.
