A new synthetic pathway involving a Diels?Alder reaction as a key step for the construction of a functionalized [9]cycloparaphenylene ([9]CPP) and two hydrogenated [6]CPP derivatives has been developed. The Diels?Alder reaction between (E,E)-1,4-di(4-bromophenyl)-1,3-butadiene and 1,4-benzoquinone followed by methylation, Ni-catalyzed homocoupling reactions and aromatization lead to the functionalized [9]CPP.
