New polymer-supported complexants were synthesized for the selective recovery of targeted metal ions. These polymers were made by functionalizing poly(vinylbenzyl chloride) with various aminoalcohols, which were then phosphorylated. This series of aminophosphates � of varying length and rigidity � were contacted with acidic metal ion solutions in order to ascertain the effect of intra-ligand cooperation on their binding mechanisms. The resins were subsequently studied for their selectivity and affinity for the uranyl ion; results from this study could be used in the development of new techniques for the remediation of acid mine drainage.
