A comprehensive study on the templating effect of different halide ions X- (X = Cl, Br, I) in the formation of light, medium and heavy lanthanide (Nd, Gd and Er respectively) �3-hydroxo clusters was taken in this paper. Histidine was used as the protecting ligand. Pentadecanuclear Nd wheel clusters formed with a halide templating ion located at the center of the wheel in all three cases where Cl-, Br- and I- acted as the templating ion respectively. For medium lanthanide Gd, pentadecanuclear wheel clusters formed when Cl- or Br- was added as templating ion, while I- was not participating in the formation of the wheel cluster when added. For heavy lanthanide Er, pentadecanuclear wheel clusters formed when Cl- or Br- was added as templating ion just like in Gd case. However, when I- was added as templating ion, dodecanuclear wheel cluster formed with two I- ions attached on both sides of the wheel.
