Ln3+ and Ln2+ complexes of formula Cp'3Ln (Cp' = C5H4SiMe3), 1  , and [K(2.2.2-cryptand)][Cp'3Ln], 2  , respectively, have been synthesized for the six lanthanides that traditionally were known to have +2 oxidation states, i.e. Ln = Eu, Yb, Sm, Tm, Dy, and Nd, to allow comparison of their structure and spectroscopy with the recently discovered +2 complexes, 2  , with Ln = Pr, Gd, Tb, Ho, Y, Er, and Lu. Complexes 1  and 2  were also prepared for Ln = La and Ce to allow comparison with the [Cp�3Ln]1- complexes (Cp� = C5H3(SiMe3)2-1,3; Ln = La, Ce) of Lappert et al. Structural, spectroscopic, and computational comparisons in this series of complexes will be presented.
