A majority of biological signaling reactions take place on membrane surfaces, but the role of the membrane in these processes remains largely unknown.  I will discuss a collection of supported membrane technologies along with their application to resolve the molecular processes of signal transduction on cell membranes.  Experiments are carried out both in living cells and in vitro, and provide detailed observations of molecular events down to the single molecule level.  I will specifically highlight recent discoveries concerning the ways in which T cells seem to bend the laws of chemistry during antigen recognition and discuss a novel regulatory mechanism governing Ras activation based on slow dynamic transitions within a protein-membrane complex.
