In 1980s, a group of researchers at the Dow Chemical Company initiated the effort of development of zeolite based catalysts for the production of linear polycyclic aromatic monomer. By combination of chemical and thermal treatment of conventional mordenite zeolite,  3-DDM zeolite with both abundant mesopore and micropore was successfully achieved. This new developed 3-DDM zeolite was soon utilized in Dow's commercial processes of biphenyl alkylation with propylene as well as transalkylation for the production of cumene. This presentation will introduce Dow's history of development of 3-DDM zeolite and its commercial applications.
