Highly-enriched 100Mo is a target material for 100Mo(p,2n)99mTc nuclear reaction using a cyclotron. Quality of 100Mo, in particular its isotopic purity, plays an important role in defining quality of the produced 99mTc. Earlier results with 99.03% enriched 100Mo, containing 0.07-0.54% of other Mo isotopes, showed that 99mTc obtained at medium energies (Ein 22-24 MeV) was contaminated by other Tc isotopes, namely 93Tc, 94Tc, 95m+95Tc, 96m+96Tc, and 97mTc. These isotopic impurities can negatively affect radiation dose received by patients. In this work, we irradiated high-purity 100Mo targets, containing less than 0.005% of 92Mo-97Mo and 0.17% of 98Mo. Our results show that the cyclotron-derived 99mTc-pertechnetate was void of many previously encountered radioisotopic contaminants, even when irradiations were performed at proton incident energy of 24 MeV. Only trace amounts of 95mTc (<0.00001%), 96Tc (<0.01%), and 97mTc (<0.001%) were detected, which are not expected to affect image quality nor internal radiation dose significantly when compared to generator-derived 99mTc. Standard quality control procedures for sodium 99mTc-pertechnetate injection were revised and adapted for the cyclotron-produced 99mTc-pertechnetate. Additional test procedures and acceptance criteria are suggested. In summary, clinical grade 99mTc can be produced at proton energies up to 24 MeV using high purity 100Mo targets.
