My contributions to the field of Environmental Chemistry have been focused on the fate and transport of toxic chemicals, such as Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) and Persistent, Bioaccumulative Toxic chemicals (PBTs). I was fortunate to be mentored and to work beside many talented people, and to have the opportunity to work on POPs/PBTs at a time when research on them was at its infancy. The research on POPs/PBTs in North America was initially focused within the Great Lakes basin and the Great Lakes themselves, and I will discuss why this placed-based research led to such extraordinary advances in the interdisciplinary knowledge of POPs/PBTs that we have today on sources, fate, transport, behavior, and adverse impacts on humans and wildlife.
