Reduction of our dependence on fossil fuels is a major challenge for scientists. At the same time, the use of first row transition metals � preferred for their higher abundance and lower cost and toxicity � is highlighted in recent chemical literature.1?Therefore, the development of earth-abundant transition metal catalysts for the sustainable processes of reducing our dependence on fossil fuels � such as clean energy conversion and development of fuels from renewable sources � is of great importance. Usage of energy from renewable sources (wind, solar) is a carbon-neutral process, but the very nature of their intermittent supply requires the development of electrocatalysts that will store energy in chemical bonds for future energy needs. The poster will describe author's postdoctoral work with Dr. Monte Helm at PNNL on the development of Ni-based electrocatalysts for hydrogen production (energy storage) and oxidation (energy release). The poster will further discuss the author's current postdoctoral research on organometallic iron catalysts towards the development of platform chemicals and fuels from renewable sources (e.g. non-edible biomass) in the laboratory of Prof. Stephen Chmely.
