Understanding the chelation of lanthanides and actinides for use in heavy metal extraction is of great importance due to a wide variety of applications, such as nuclear waste remediation and mineral extraction. Phosphoryl groups have demonstrated high binding affinity for lanthanides and actinides due to their high polarity. Our group is modifying a series of phosphoryl-based bidentate ligands by increasing the length of the carbon chain between chelation sites. This study has revealed useful information regarding the chelation properties of these ligands toward f-elements. The resultant metal-ligand complexes have been investigated by extraction studies, x-ray crystallography, IR and NMR spectroscopy.
