Metallic nanostructures consisting of a concentric arrangement of a solid core and a surrounding shell sustain a strong internal electromagnetic field enhancement (FE). Maximizing the FE is important for applications in plasmonic sensing and surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS). An approach is described to model the metallic nanostructures and maximize their FE using the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method.
