The design and synthetic progress towards stable aromatic hydrocarbon radicals as polarizing agents for Dynamic Nuclear Polarization (DNP) will be presented. DNP is a technique used to provide sensitivity enhancements in NMR spectroscopy. DNP employs microwave irradiation to transfer electron polarization from a radical to the observed nuclei (e.g., 13C). Radicals based on 1,5-bis(diphenylene)-2,3,4-triphenyl-1,3-pentadiene, 1,2,3-triaryl-1H-cyclopenta[l]-phenanthrene, and tetrabenzo[a,c,g,i]fluorene and the role of steric protection will be discussed.
