The Student Chapter of the American Chemical Society at the Modesto A. Maidique Campus of Florida International University has been engaged in taking chemistry to the South Florida community. The chapter has been working hard on multiple outreach projects aimed at promoting interest and enthusiasm for chemistry. Projects included performing lab demos in public museums and libraries, mentoring elementary, junior high, and high school students, and judging science fairs. The chapter also worked to bring school students on campus to allow them to experience attending college at a large research university. While on campus, they participated in interactive demonstrations and performed inquiry based experiments.The club is currently working on developing food chemistry experiments based on materials that are commonly available in any household or can be easily purchased at any grocery store or drugstore. The chapter hopes to expand this program to involve local schools and help them give their students meaningful laboratory experiences.In keeping with our main mission to promote awareness and provide insight into the benefits of getting a degree in chemistry, we are organizing a �Careers in Chemistry� workshop in partnership with the Chemistry department. In directing our efforts to get a Chemistry Learning Resource Center for our undergraduate students to study chemistry, receive chemistry tutoring and discuss chemistry related topics, it is our hope that this will also result in the formation of a community of chemistry scholars and increase the number of chemistry majors.
