The substitution of the apical fluorine of the SF5 group influences the reactivity and the conformation of the aliphatic molecules into which it has been substituted.  The influence of substituents on structure as determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction studies and on charge distribution as assessed by computational methods and reactivity experiments will be reported.  These results will be compared and correlated with the carbon-13 chemical shifts of the substituted molecules.   The properties of the tetrafluoro-?6-sulfanes  with those of  pentafluoro ?6-sulfanes  will be contrasted to highlight the measureable influence of substitution.
