SSZ-13 zeolite, a CHA-type aluminosilcate, was verified to be a suitable candidate to develop the promising catalysts for NH3-SCR of NOx reaction, as shown in . However, the conventional method of synthesize the SSZ-13 zeolite involved the use of a very expensive template. In this work, an innocuous and economical template for SSZ-13 preparation was attempted. The as-synthesized SSZ-13 zeolite after ion exchange by copper nitrate solution exhibited a superior SCR performance than the traditional zeolitic catalysts of Cu-Beta and Cu-ZSM-5 (commercial catalysts). The characterization of these samples indicated that the CHA-type structure associated with Cu species which were totally different from those dispersing over the Beta and ZSM-5 zeolites. The Cu-SSZ-13 has the most abundant Cu cations among three investigated Cu-zeolites; furthermore, either on the surface or in the bulk, the ratio of Cu+/Cu2+ ions is also the highest. The CHA-type structure likely favors the formation of Copper ions, especially containing more Cu+ ions than the others, rather than CuO. The activity of Cu(CuCl)-ZSM-5 (prepared by the solid-state ion-exchange method) clearly indicated that Cu+ ions could make a great contribution to the low-temperature activity. The activity of protonic zeolites samples was also investigated in order to clarify the topology effect of the different zeolites on SCR performances. H-SSZ-13 sample achieved a surprising activity at above 400oC (over 90% NOx conversion).
