Tris(2-pyridyl)phosphine (PPy3) and tris(2-pyridyl)phosphine oxide (OPPy3) reacted with M(II) nitrates [M= Mn(II), Fe(II), Co(II)] in simple one-pot procedures to yield facially coordinating ligand-metal complexes. These complexes were characterized by IR and UV-visible spectroscopy, electrochemistry, X-ray diffraction, and 1H/31P NMR spectroscopy. X-ray crystallography showed that both the PPy3 and OPPy3 ligands coordinated in a facial N,N,N manner to the metal centers, leaving the phosphorus of the PPy3 ligand open to possible further coordination chemistry.
