Vapochromic materials undergo a color change when exposed to vapors of organic compounds.  Such materials have potential practical importance in a wide range of environmental sensing applications.  However, the discovery of vapochromic materials is largely serendipitous, and the prediction of vapochromic properties prior to synthesis seems only a distant possibility.  Recently, we have undertaken a detailed study of the mechanism of response of a series of vapochromic platinum complexes.  In this presentation, we will explore the relationships between structural changes, thermodynamics, speed of response, sensitivity, and selectivity for a series of materials.  We also will identify some of the major challenges in developing such materials for chemical sensor applications and suggest possible solutions.
