This presentation will focus on the generation of high-valent metal-oxo corrolazines (e.g. Mn, Fe) and their reactivity in C-H cleavage reactions. Photoirradiation of an Mn(III) corrolazine with visible light leads to the activation of O2 and conversion of the Mn(III) complex to an Mn(V) terminal oxo complex. Under certain conditions of photoirradiation, toluene derivatives can be selectively oxidized via C-H cleavage prior to formation of the Mn(V)(O) complex. The reactivity of this high-valent Mn-oxo species with C-H substrates can be tuned by addition of either anionic donors or Lewis acids, and our latest results in this area will be discussed. The reactivity of analogous iron-oxo complexes toward C-H substrates will also be addressed. Mechanistic findings will be put in context with current information on the mechanisms of heme enzymes such as Cytochrome P450.
