Our group has recently reported several examples of cooperative small molecule activation processes and catalysis promoted by a reduced heterobimetallic Zr/Co complex. Among these transformations, several examples of radical reactivity at the Zr center have been uncovered, including catalytic hydrosilylation that proceeds via a radical mechanism. Computational and spectroscopic investigations of the active Zr/Co species reveal a zwitterionic ZrIV/Co-I description, suggesting that electron transfer must occur through the metal-metal interaction for radical reactivity to occur at the d0 Zr.
