Compounds containing both metal-metal and metal-ligand multiple bonds are proposed highly reactive intermediates in a number of catalytic group transfer reactions. Our recent efforts to prepare such compounds and to explore their reactivity will be described. The electronic structure of these compounds will be described and compared with analogous mononuclear compounds so that the effect of the bimetallic structure can be assessed. In particular, we will emphasize the correlation of electronic structure with chemical reactivity.
