Two-coordinate transition metal complexes are a relatively rare class of compounds with unusual electronic and chemical properties and hold promise as cheap, easily prepared catalysts. The role of the recently reported two-coordinate nickel bis(amido) complex Ni[N(SiMe3)(2,6-iPr2C6H3)]2 and the related nickel(III) alkyl complex (Me)Ni[N(SiMe3)(2,6-iPr2C6H3)]2 in C-C coupling catalysis will be discussed. This system enables the preparation and isolation of previously unobserved intermediates in the nickel-catalyzed coupling of Grignard reagents with aryl halides and new insight into the mechanism of these couplings.
