In situ chemical oxidation (ISCO) is an effect technique to treat soil and groundwater contaminated by organic pollutants. Persulfate anion (S2O82-) has been postulated to be activated by ferrous ion (Fe2+) to produce sulfate free radical, which can strongly destroy some organic contaminants. In this study antiepileptic drug camazepine (CBZ) was removed by the process of ferrous activated persulfate based ISCO. Two types of persulfate-releasing materials which were made of sodium perfulfate, cement, sand and water, paraffin wax and sand, respectively, were studied. Bench experiments were used to determine persulfate-releasing rate of the oxidant materials after contacted with water. Column experiments were performed to evaluate the efficiencies of CBZ removal. The optimized ratio of the persulfate-releasing matericals was 10:1:2.5:4 (cement: sand: water: persulfate) and 10:1 (paraffin wax: sand).  Additionally, persulfate could release till 7 days. More than 50% CBZ was removed after using the ferrous ion activated persulfate-releasing materials in 1 hour and the efficiency was stable prolonged with time in 9 hours. However,the efficiency could reach 100% after using two times of the releasing materials. The effluent samples including persulfate, ferrous ion, and pH were identified. Results suggested that using ferrous ion activated persulfate-releasing materials can sustainingly remediate CBZ in underground water and apply to ISCO treatment potentially.
