A variety of experiments used in our organic chemistry laboratory curriculum at the University of Minnesota will be presented which are designed to ignite student interest by sharing their connection to active research programs in the department as well as industrial practices.  Examples include: a) a green experiment which teaches students the power of X-ray crystallography (particularly appropriate since 2014 is the International Year of Crystallography); b) a recently discovered renewable, degradable copolymer synthesis; and c) a how a fluorescent dye can be used in chemical biology applications.  The material from one experiment is actually donated to a research lab for incorporation into an asymmetric catalysis synthesis.  Our experience has shown that providing the connection to modern science encourages students to seek research opportunities and provide context for students even if this is their final chemistry course required.
