Accurate determination of porewater and bulk water concentrations of hydrophobic organic chemicals (HOCs) is essential for the estimation of bioavailable fractions of contaminant mass present in surface water sediments, and in the overlaying water column, respectively. Here, we report on the design and evaluation of a novel active sampling device, the in situ sampler for bioavailability assessment (IS2B). The device is capable of sampling both bulk water and porewater simultaneously using a low-flow, 6-channel peristaltic precision pump that delivers metered water to an array of solid-phase extraction cartridges. Initial lab-based validation of the sampler was performed with the pesticide fipronil and one of its breakdown products, fipronil sulfide. Surrogate-adjusted recovery of fipronil spiked into a lab-created porewater matrix at an effective concentration of 10 ng/L was 103�10 %. Absolute recoveries of analytes spiked into lab-created porewater (10 ng/L) were 89�7 % for fipronil sulfide to 110�8 % for fipronil, respectively. The limit of detection for fipronil was 270 pg/L, with a limit of quantitation of 890 pg/L.  Extraction and quantitation of the two analytes in water impacted by wastewater effluents is under investigation, as are benchtop and field-validation experiments. The results obtained thus far are indicative of the feasibility of using the IS2B device for in situ pre-concentration of HOCs present in both surface water and sediment porewater.
