The chlorination and photodegradation of Chloramphenicol (CAP), an antibiotic drug, has been investigated in aqueous heterogeneous. The factors affecting CAP degradation were studied and are described in detail, including initial pH, ionic strength and initial concentrations of iron and temperature both in chlorination and photodegradation process.  The disappearance of the CAP follows approximately a pseudo-first-order kinetics in chlorination process. Degradation of CAP with different initial concentration over titanium dioxide was carried out in a photo catalytic reactor. Photocatalytic rates were well described by the simplified Langmuir�Hinshelwood model. Results showed that degradation efficiency up to 90% was achieved by chlorination and TiO2-photolysis of CAP at pH 5~7. Higher salt content (NaCl) was found to benefit chlorination and photolysis. NO3- tended to inhibit the photodegradation of CAP under the conditions of this work. Chlorine and photocatalytic were used as chemical oxidants for the degradation of CAP. Increasing pH resulted in a significant decrease in the efficiency of both process. The effect of temperature on the degradation rate of Chloramphenicol shows. The mineralization under various experimental conditions has been calculated. When chlorine was used, the efficiency of degradation was the highest. It was found that CAP presented high reaction rates, while followed intermediate and slow reaction rates. In addition, byproducts are also observed, corresponding to ready known.
