Previously, our lab has demonstrated the utility of the pentadentate ligand PY5Me2 (2,6-bis[1,1-bis(2-pyridyl)ethyl]pyridine) and its derivatives in stabilizing first and second row transition metals for catalysis applications. While PY5Me2 and its variants predominantly employ neutral nitrogen-donor moieties, we hypothesize that a polyanionic oxygen-donating environment could afford greater stabilization to high-valent intermediates generated in oxidation catalysis. Toward this end, we have synthesized the new tetraanionic ligand BmMPY4� (2,2'-(pyridine-2,6-diyl)bis(2-methylmalonate)), which is composed of a central, axial pyridine and four equatorial carboxylate donors. We present the synthesis and characterization of a series of first row transition metal complexes with this ligand that take the form [(BmMPY4�)M(H2O)]2� (M = Mn2+, Fe2+, Co2+, Ni2+, Cu2+, Zn2+). Like PY5Me2, the ligand BmMPY4� adopts a pentadentate, square pyramidal geometry around the metal centers, which promotes stability of the resulting complexes through the chelate effect, and retains an open coordination site for potential substrates. Full characterization, reactivity, and redox studies are ongoing.
