The search for alternative fuel sources and the marketability of �going green� has progressively gained much attention over the past few decades.  In the quest for a sustainable future, many of the processes developed exploit the use of living organisms for the purpose of being environmentally innocuous and sustainable; from plants and algae being utilized for the purpose of producing biofuels to the employing of microorganisms for bioremediation and mass production of pharmaceuticals.  As the field of biotechnology gains popularity, one of the main aspects being researched involves the development of commercial scale fuel and chemical production from biomass feedstocks.   An immense quantity of money is invested annually into this research and many of the studies conducted at smaller bench scales are used in the implementation at industrial levels.  It is the purpose of this research to develop a method that achieves maximum yield while maintaining feasibility.  However, after a method is developed many new challenges are encountered during the scale-up process.  Hazen Research, Inc. based out of Golden Colorado specializes in the bench scale research and implementation of such ventures into pilot plant operations. The objective of this project was to bring to light the issues that are encountered during this procedure in order to reduce future costs of hindrances faced.
