Examinations represent key artifacts of the teaching enterprise. In the United States, chemistry presents a particularly interesting context for considering the artifacts of exams because of the existance of the ACS Exams Institute. The production and use of nationally normed exams in general chemistry provides a rather robust means for identifying the content considered important for students to know in current general chemistry teaching. This data has been organized by considering roughly 2000 items from exams over the past 20 years in the context of an 'anchoring concepts' content map. This talk will present information both about what has been tested often (and is therefore considered important) versus what has received relatively little attention in terms of ACS Exam content coverage.
