The first commercial PVDF grade for coatings, KYNAR 500� PVDF, was introduced by the Pennsalt Corporation in 1965.  Five decades later, this product is the global standard for long-lived baked architectural finishes (topcoats) on metal for monumental buildings.  Typical architectural finish formulations are based on 70-80 wt% PVDF, and 20-30% of a miscible acrylic, on total binder, and provide decades of service life at a thickness less than that of a human hair.   Over the years, a stream of new innovations has enabled PVDF technology to extend into a wide variety of other applications- usually with acrylics.   In this address, we will review these developments, and look at challenges for the next 50 years.
