Catalysts consisting of a single catalyst site, e.g., isolated metal oxo species, metal cations, protons, stabilized by a ligand set or by an inorganic support, are ideal candidates for studying the influence of site composition and structure, and site confinement on the activity of selectivity of such sites to promote chemical reactions. This talk will illustrate the degrees of control of the properties that can be achieved by varying ligand composition, support composition, and site confinement in a systematic manner to tune the catalytic properties of the site. Examples will include the oxidative carbonylation of toluene on Rh complexes, the epoxidation of cycloheptene on Fe porphyrin complexes, the oxidation of methanol on isolated vanadate species, the oligomerization of propene on Ni, and the self condensation of aldehydes.
