Chemical nomenclature is an important part of chemical education at any level and in any language. While development of chemical nomenclature in the English language is governed by the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC), language specific nomenclature is supposed to be adapted by corresponding organizations in individual countries. This results in significant variation of nomenclature conventions and availability of resources. For educators in non-English institutions, translating names from English to another language can be problematic as small differences in spacing, capitalization, and spelling can result in incorrect translated results that are difficult to easily detect.Nomenclature software such as ACD/Name�that has been available for more than 15 years�offers name generation in ten languages including Spanish, German, and French. Not only does the software automatically generate chemical names but also serves as an educational tool by highlighting the structure-to-name relationship and providing links to the relevant IUPAC rules. This results in a uniform tool for educators in different countries and with bilingual classes.As new conventions are announced, such as the release of the latest version of Nomenclature of Organic Chemistry (IUPAC Blue Book) in 2013, it is crucial for educators to be aware of the rules and properly instruct students in their classes. We will discuss the new rules and naming protocols now being implemented in software programs such as ACD/Name that are important for educators to understand.
