The extraction of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and aliphatic hydrocarbons from , petroleum source rock by non-ionic surfactants with the assistance of microwave was investigated and the conditions for maximum yield were determined. The results showed that the extraction temperatures and kinetic rates have significant effects on extraction yields of both PAHs and aliphatic hydrocarbons. The optimum temperatures for microwave-assisted non-ionic surfactant extraction of PAHs and aliphatic hydrocarbons from petroleum source rock were 120 oC and 105 oC, respectively. The optimum extraction time for most of PAHs was at 40 minutes while a few had it at 30 minutes. The optimum extraction time for the aliphatic hydrocarbons was at 50 minutes. The yields of the analytes were much higher using microwave assisted nonionic surfactant extraction than with Soxhlet extraction. The recoveries of the n-alkanes and acyclic isoprenoid hydrocarbons for GC�MS analysis from the extractant nonionic surfactant solution by in-tube extraction (ITEX 2) with a TENAX TA adsorbent was found to be efficient.The dissolution and extraction of petroleum source rock by nonionic surfactant to determine its trace metals (V. Ni. Co, Mn, and Mo) content with the assistance of microwave irradiation were investigated and the conditions for optimum yield were determined. A complementary microwave-assisted acid dissolution method was also optimized. The optimum temperature for microwave-assisted nonionic surfactant dissolution of petroleum source rock for trace metals determination was 200 oC and the best yields of the metals were obtained at 40 min. The optimum temperature and time of nonionic surfactant extraction of trace metals from petroleum source rock were 90 oC and 45 min, respectively. The microwave-assisted acid digestion gave optimum yields of the trace metals at 70 min. The new nonionic surfactant digestion and extraction methods showed efficiencies comparable to those afforded by the acid digestion method for three elements out five elements determined in this study, although their recoveries for vanadium and manganese were relatively low, but a reduction of the digestion/extraction times and environmentally friendliness of the new nonionic surfactant based methods are clear advantages. The results also show that microwave-assisted non-ionic surfactant extraction is a good and efficient green analytical preparatory technique for geochemical evaluation of petroleum source rock.
