In the last decade, the computer arms race delivered some unprecedented innovation in miniaturization, speed and overall ease of use. These progresses crossed over into many other fields like analytical instrumentation where breakthrough technology has moved at a slower pace but where progresses in computer and optoelectronics have delivered radical changes. In particular, the molecular spectroscopy instrument landscape has changed dramatically. Optical Spectroscopy Instrument design evolved from a model based on lab bound scientists to one based on non-technical personnel using tablet like solutions to reach actionable answers. In particular, driven by application needs, Infrared spectroscopy sees a resurgence of interest with the development of small, rugged IR portable/ handheld instruments chattering the old axiom of bringing the problem to the solution. Because of the progress mentioned above, Michelson interferometer based FTIR can now be used for non-destructive testing to qualify materials, assess damage on composites or determine coating thickness among other things wherever it is needed. Combined with easy to use interface, portable spectroscopy can now be used by non-technical users to measure materials at their source, providing quicker QC, thereby reducing test costs. In this talk, we will focus on applications of handheld FTIR for analysis of polymers, composites/coatings and oil/lubricant analysis. First, we will cover determination of coatings cure via handheld FTIR spectroscopy. Though many coating processes are automated, variations may happen. We will show how handheld FTIR can be used to determine if visibly different spots are fully cured or have unsuspected issues. Additionally, we will also show how FTIR can be correlated to heat damage of BMI composites for aerospace applications such as the maintenance of the Boeing 787 fuselage. Secondly, we will discuss a new method of identifying carbon blacked filled elastomers using a handheld FTIR for process safety. Finally, we will turn our attention to lubrication system analysis where FTIR can be used to detect early onset of lubricant degradation before internal components damage.
