Pd-catalyzed oxidation of allylic C-H bonds was first reported more than four decades ago. Methods capable of using O2 as the oxidant are rare, and systems that accomplish this goal rarely achieve high turnover numbers or rates. Recent investigation of this reaction class in our lab has uncovered new catalyst systems, mechanistic insights, and approaches to use O2 as the stoichiometric oxidant.
