Waste streams discharged from electroplating units and similar industrial operations contain high concentrations of toxic Cr(VI) ions. In this study, novel adsorbents for Cr(VI) ions were synthesized from drinking water treatment (DWT) residuals. The effects of acid concentration, acid type and ratio, ultrasonication time, and heating duration, to the adsorption capacities of the synthesized adsorbents were investigated. Acid treatment using dual-acid solutions yielded lower adsorption capacities compared to pure acid solutions. In addition, adsorption capacities decreased with ultrasonication time and heating duration. Experimental data gave high correlation for the Freundlich isotherm (R2 = 0.9607) and the pseudo 2nd order kinetic model (R2 = 0.9740) suggesting chemisorption between OH and Cr anions. This study demonstrates that materials synthesized from DWT residuals are promising adsorbents for the removal of Cr (VI) from wastewaters.
