Synchrotron x-ray and neutron facilities are indispensable scientific resources and provide powerful instrumentations for both fundamental and applied research. During the past several years, we have been utilizing the state-of-the-art synchrotron and neutron techniques to investigate a large variety of advanced materials for rechargeable battery applications. In this talk, we will present our recent work on both in-situ and ex-situ studies of battery materials, in order to understand the material properties at the electronic, atomic and molecular levels. We will also discuss the challenges in battery research and our future experimental approaches and computational simulations.
