We present a new synthetic route for the synthesis of miktoarm star polymers. Placing a single reactive maleimide unit in the middle or at the end of a polymer chain under nitroxide-mediate polymerization conditions allows a subsequent sequential post-polymerization modification with two end-functionalized polymers. This arm-first approach takes advantage of the defined sequence of conjugation chemistries comprised of an ester-amine conjugation and a Mitsunobu reaction. This new route enables the linkage of amino-terminated and hydroxyl-terminated polymers onto a polymer chain that has been equipped with a single reactive moiety. Examples of stars along with the control of the arm-length and its chemistry will be discussed.
